CU*Answers Supports “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” Campaign

CU*Answers and the cuasterisk.com network is urging its staff and client credit unions to take part in the CUNA-sponsored “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” campaign designed to prevent lawmakers from eliminating the credit union tax exemption as part of their upcoming tax reform.

This tax exemption is crucial in maintaining the credit union difference as it allows credit unions to offer their members lower loan rates and fees and higher savings rates.

As part of the “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” campaign, CU*Answers encouraged its staff and clients to tweet their lawmakers on July 23, “Don’t Tax Tuesday,” a Twitter event designed to get credit union supporters to tweet their respective legislators and communicate the importance of preserving the credit union tax exemption. The timing of this event was no accident; just three days after the Twitter event, Friday, July 26, was the deadline for senators to submit their tax reform proposals to Finance Committee leaders, who will then use those suggestions to create a comprehensive proposal for a new US tax code.

Aside from promoting the July 23 “Don’t Tax Tuesday” event, CU*Answers has announced other ways that credit union supporters can join the “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” movement:

  • They can email their legislator.
  • They can call their legislator at 877-642-4223. (They’ll be prompted to enter their ZIP code and will then be transferred to the office of their legislator.)
  • They can like the “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” movement on Facebook.
  • They can follow the “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” movement on Twitter.
